I Mary B. Craig of the County of Prince William & state of Virginia, being at this time in perfect health and of a sound and disposing mind, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament, in the manner and form as follows, Viz:

I give and bequeath to my husband William M. Craig all and every discription of property I may be possessed of, meaning two slaves, Mary and Julia Ann, with their increase, my lands houses here or elsewhere, all monies loaned out, all bonds and accounts due to me at the time of my death, also my stock of horses, cattle sheep & hogs, farming utensils, household and kitchen furniture of every discription. All of the above property I leave to my said husband free from the molestation of any person or persons whatsoever and by him to disposed of in any manner that may best suit him, hereby revoking annuling all other wills that I may have made. I leave my said husband my executor and of whom I design that no security be required. Witness my hand and seal this fifteenth day of August A.D. Eighteen hundred and forty two.

In Prince William County Court April 3d 1849

This last will & testament of Mary B. Craig was produced to the court & the proof thereof opposed by William T. McCarty & Charles J. Fox whereinfore for reasons appearing __ the court, on the motion of Seymour Lynn who made oath thereto & together with George F. Carney his security entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $3500 conditioned as the law directs he is appointed to collect & preserve the goods & chattles of the said Mary B. Craig decd during the contest about her said last will & testament or until the further order of the said court. And on the 6th of August 1849 this said last will & testament of Mary B. Craig was again presented to the court together with the commission for taking the attestation of William A. Lane a witness thereto & the certificate of the execution of the sd. commission which being inspected by the court & the sd. will being also proved by the oath of Northumberland Pearson another subscribing witness thereto the same is ordered to be recorded as the true last will & testament of said Mary B. Craig decd. And on the motion of William M. Craig the Excr therein named who made oath thereto & entered into acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $5000 without security according to the testators request the court being of the opinion that she has left property more than sufficient to pay her debts, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in due form.

I Jane Carney do hereby make my last Will & Testament in manner & form following (that is to say)

First. I give & bequeath to my son John Carney thirty dollars as his full portion of my estate.

Secondly, I give to my Granddaughter Jane Hardin daughter of Byram Hardin one horse bridle & saddle worth fifty dollars & fifty dollars in money.

Thirdly, I give to my Granddaughter Delia Carney daughter of my son Benjamin one horse bridle & saddle worth fifty dollars & fifty dollars in money.

Fourthly, I give to my son Benjamin Carney one fifth of the residue of my estate after deducting ___ dollars the amount of an account he is due me.

Fifthly, I give to my son William Carney one fifth of my Estate after taking out the three legacies just mentioned taking from his portion ____ dollars he is due me.

Sixthly, I give to my daughter Elizabeth Murthey one fifth of my estate after taking out the three legacies just mentioned taking from her portion forty five dollars she is due me.

Seventhly, I give to my son Joshua one fifth of my Estate after the three legacies just mentioned be pd, he accounting for the thirty five dollars he is due me.

Eighthly, I give to my daughter Tamer Hardin one fifth of my estate after the three legacies [j]ust mentioned be paid.

Lastly, I do hereby constitute & appoint Byram Hardin the husband of my daughter Tamer Executor of this my last will & testament hereby revoking all other or former Wills or testaments by me heretofore made.

This last will and testament of Jane Carney decd was presented to the court by Byram Harding the Execr. therein named and being proved by the oaths of Thomas Nelson and Richd. W. Weedon is ordered to be recorded, and the said Byram Harding made oath to the same according to law and having taken the oath of an Exor. .and performed what is usual in such cases certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

INQUISITION INDENTED and taken this fourteenth day of April Anno Domini 1808 at the Court House of Prince William County Between Philip D. Dawe Escheater for the Commonwealth of Virginia in and for the County aforesaid of the one part and George Williams, Samuel Davis, Wm. Keys, Benjamin Cole, Samuel Ashton, Noah Maddox, Benjamin Carney, James Holliday, George Cockrell, John Lowe, Thos. Jacob, Joseph Gilbert, John Watson, Wm. Cocke, Wm. Farrow and Beverly R. Wagener, good and lawful men and freeholders of the same County impannelled by the Sheriff of the same County and duly sworn, Witnesseth that the same good and lawful men so impannelled and sworn as aforesaid do find that Francis Rice late of the Borough of Norfolk dies siezed in fee simple of a tract of land containing one hundred and forty acres more or less lying near Dumfries in Prince Wm. County commonly called Grays that by his will duly proved and recorded in the Borough Court of Norfolk he devised said land to his wife Elizabeth Rice during her life and after her death to any children of the said Elizabeth that she might have after his the said Francis's death and if she should die without having such issue then to his the said Rice's surviving brothers and sisters, that said Elizabeth died sometime in the year 1804 -- without having any issue and that the brothers and sisters of the said Francis Rice appear to us to be aliens, It also does not appear to the jurors and Escheater aforesaid that the wife of the said Rice was a Citizen or that she hath relatives citizens of any of the United States of America, Therefore forasmuch as the said Francis Rice died without heir citizen of this Commonwealth or of the United States of America capable of holding the said before mentioned tract of land, that the same Escheated to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and to the same Commonwealth doth of right belong. We accordingly do escheat the same, Witness the hands and seals of the Escheator and of the jurors aforesaid the day and year above written.

N.B. The within mentd. land was purchased by William Savage of David Bland Deed recorded in the County Court of Prince Wm. in the year 1779, Savage devised his Estate to Edward Rice his will recorded in the General Court in 1789 Edwd. Rice devised hsi EState to Francis Rice within named his will recorded in the District Court held at Suffolk in 1801. Francis Rice devised it as writhin.

Society Saturday: Tournament (1860)

A TOURNAMENT was held last Tuesday in the neighboring county of Prince William at the store of Wm. H. Keys. A large number were present. The successful knights were Jas. S. Cole, who named Miss Julia Tansil Queen of Love and Beauty; S. F. Davis, who named Miss Jennie Carney, First Maid of Honor; Jas. V. Nash, who named (per Montgomery Tansil) Miss Bettie Cockerell, Second Maid; and Maj. Jas. R. Purcell who named Miss Mollie Pridmore, Third Maid. The charge to the Knights was delivered by James E. Williams.

In connection with the tournament a cotillion party was given which passed off very creditably and was continued the next day (Wednesday). Much satisfaction was expressed at the manner in which the host (Mr. Wm. H. Keys) discharged his arduous duties. The occasion was one long to be remembered by all who took part in it.

I BENSON LYNN being weak of body but of sound mind do will and desire this my last will and testament shall be fully carried out after my death, I desire first all my just debts to be paid 2d. I leave my dwelling house and other houses and all the land on the south side of the Occoquan road and the east of the road heading to Lawrence Cole’s to my daughters MARY F. NORMAN, MAHALLA M. LYNN and LUWELLEN S. LYNN during their single lives but should either or all marry then their interest to be equally divided between SEYMOUR LYNN, GEORGE F. CARNEY, LELAND A. LYNN, JAMES E. LYNN and ALEXANDER P. LYNN together with the rest of my estate to the above named legatees. I leave LEVI C. LYNN, LAFAYETTE LYNN, ELIZABETH PRIDMORE and the heirs of LEROY W. LYNN each one, one dollar $1 and lastly I appoint ALEXANDER P. LYNN my executor hereby revoking all other wills. Given under my hand and seal of April 17th 1858.

Rail Road Meeting in Prince William

At a meeting in the lower part of Prince William County, at Cole's Precinct, held on the 24th, Seymour Lynn, in the chair, and P. D. Lipscomb, Secretary, the following resolutions were adopted:

Resolved, That this meeting cordially approve of the proposed extension of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, from some point on the said road, to a point on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad at or near Manassas Station in Prince William County, and we pledge ourselves to do all in our power to facilitate said extension.

Resolved, That William P. Cole, Robert Hodgkin, Lawrence Cole, George F. Carney, William Botts, and Seymour Lynn, be appointed a committee to procure grants of the right of way for said road through this county; and said committee are requested to report progress to a meeting to be held at Bertrnd E. Francis's in this county on Saturday the 8th day of July 1854, at 2 o'clock P. M.

Col. Eppa Hunton, Charles E. Sinclair, esq., and Seymour Lynn, esq., addressed the meeting very ably and eloquently in favor of the proposed extension.
