MANASSAS SCHOOLS BEGIN MUSIC STUDY

Miss Virginia Speiden Appointed Director, with Singing and Chorus Work Planned

MANASSAS, Va., July 4.--With the appointment yesterday by the school board of Miss Virginia Nelson Spieden to the newly created office of director of music in the Manassas schools, the plans for training graded school children in singing and high school girls in chorus work will be brought to fruition in September.

Miss Spieden is a graduate of Manassas High School, the Temple School of Music here, has studied under private instructors and was an honor graduate in music at Hollins College, Roanoke.

The honor of placing music in the local schools belongs to the chorus section of the Manassas Women's Club, as the school officials, though favoring the project, had no funds available for the purpose. The chorus section of the Woman's Club was organized last year by Mrs. R. S. Illingworth, and under her direction the chorus came to be the outstanding musical organization in Prince William County. Through a series of concerts given from time to time here and at other points in the county sufficient funds have been realized and turned over to the school board to finance the school music for the school term of 1930-31.

MANASSAS, VA. October 20 -- Miss Ruth Althea Round, second daughter of Lieutenant and Mrs. George Carr Round, and Allison A. Hooff were quietly married here on Monday evening at the home of the bride, by Rev. J. F. Burks, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. After a Northern wedding tour they will return to the Hooff residence, in Grant Avenue, Manassas. The bride is a graduate of the Manassas High School and the State Normal School, at Harrisonburg. She has been instructor of physical education at the Orthopedic Hospital, at White Plains, N.Y.; the Binford High School at Richmond, and the Harrisonburg Normal. Mr. Hooff, who is a native of Charles Town, W. Va., is the junior partner in a Manassas lumber firm.

Dr. and Mrs. William J Bell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday evening at their home, near Brentsville, Prince William County, five children and ten of their twenty-five grandchildren being present. Dr. and Mrs. Bell are natives of Augusta County, Mrs. Bell before her marriage having been Miss. Mary Agnes Patterson. Dr. Bell served in the Confederate army.

The Manassas Good Housekeepers' Club was entertained on Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Thomas F. Coleman.

The Manassas Chapter of the American Red Cross has elected the following officers: chairman, George G. Tyler, clerk of Prince William County; vice-chairman, Mrs. George T. Lyon; treasurer, L. Frank Pattie, cashier of the National Bank of Manassas; secretary, Miss Mary Larkin, editor of the Manassas Journal, and executive committee, W. C. Wagener, Mayor of Manassas; Mrs. C. M. Larkin, principal of the Manassas graded school; Mrs. C. R. C. Johnson, Mrs. R. S. Hynson, and Mrs. J. F. Burkes, wife of the rector of Trinity Church.

Mrs. James F. Birkett has returned from an extended stay in Rupert, Idaho, where she was the guest of her son-in-law and daughter, Rev. and Mrs. Robert Lee Lewis.

Mr. and Mrs. James R. Larkin attended the State Fair at Richmond, and visited their son, Private Francis Norvell Larkin, at Camp Lee.

Miss Marianna Speiden, of Washington, was the recent guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Speiden.

Miss Mary Lee Chapman has returned from Roanoke, where she was the guest of her grandmother, Mrs. Martha Chapman.

CIRCUIT COURT CLERK 40 YEARS

Edwin Nelson, Ex-Legislator, of Manassas, Va., Dead

Manassas, Va., Feb. 12 -- Edwin Nelson, for 40 years Clerk of the Circuit Court of Prince William County, and holding other offices of public trust, died here today after a lingering illness of a complication of diseases in his eightieth year.  The funeral will take place from the Primitive Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, and interment will be made in the Confederate Cemetery.

The widow, three sons, John H. Nelson, connected with the Interstate Commerce Commission, C. Paul Nelson, of Charlestown, W. Va., and James E. Nelson, of this place, and two daughters, Mrs. A. O. Weeden, of New Baltimore, Va., and Mrs. Albert Speiden, of Manassas, survive.

Mr. Nelson represented Prince William county in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1878-79 and was 'one of the strongest advocates of the famous McCulloch bill, through which the Virginia debt question was settled.

Miss Effie Lee Nelson, daughter of Mr. Edwin Nelson of Manassas, Va., and Mr. Albert Speiden of Washington were married last evening in the Baptist Church, Manassas, by the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Waters, assisted by Drs. Athey and Trainham.  The bride was escorted to the altar by her  brother, Mr. James E. Nelson, and attended by her cousin, Miss Nellie B. Nelson, while Mr. William L. Speiden attended the groom.  Miss Florence E. Herrell presided at the organ.  The ushers were Messrs. John H. Nelson, Frank R. Simpson, C. Paul Nelson, Cuthbert S. Speiden, Frank L. Slaymaker and Thomas L. Speiden.  After a reception and entertainment at the residence of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. Speiden left for Niagara and other parts north.

CHILD DIES SUDDENLY

Five-Year Old Nelson Speiden Buried Here Monday

Edwin Nelson Speiden, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Speiden, and grandson and namesake of the late Lieut. Edwin Nelson, died Saturday morning at the home of his parents on Battle street, after an illness of less than twenty-four hours.  He was five years old and is survived by his parents and one sister, Miss Virginia Speiden, a few years his senior.

The funeral took place Monday afternoon at the Primitive Baptist Church and interment was made in the family lot in the Manassas cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. T. D. D. Clark, pastor of the Manassas Baptist Church.  The pallbearers were Messrs. John H. and James E. Nelson, of Washington, C. Paul Nelson, of Huntington, W. Va., and A. O. Weedon, of Warrenton, brothers and brother-in-law of Mrs. Speiden.
