I William Mount of the State of Virginia in the county of Prince William being weak now in health, but perfectly sound in memory do make this last Will and Testament, revoking all other that may be formerly made.

First, I desire that all my just debts be paid out of my personal Estate. Secondly, I desire that all my children may have an equal share from the income of my Estate applied to the education of them seperately as their ages may require it in paying the tuition of them. Thirdly, I desire that the whole of my Estate may be kept together untill the youngest child may arrive of age. Fourthly, on my youngest child arriving at the age of twenty one years, or my youngest surviving child, my Estate both real & personal I desire may be sold to the highest bidder and the net amount thereof to be divided equally among all my children & wife. Fifthly, I desire that should any one of my sons become industrious and carefull managing man that the Estate may be taken out of the hands of the administrators at any time the county court of Prince William may deem it safe to Trust him with it, and place it in the hands of my aforesaid discribed sons.  Sixthly and lastly, I do appoint John Hutchison and Reubin Hutchison my sole Executors of this my last will and testament made this thirteenth day of April eighteen hundred and sixteen.  Given from under my hand in the presence of

At a court of quarterly sessions held for Prince William county June 3, 1816.

This last will and testament of William Mount dec'd was presented to the court and being proved by the oath of Washington J. Washington is ordered to be certified. And at a court of Quarterly sessions held for said county August 5, 1861 - This said last will and testament of William Mount dec'd was fully proved by the oath of William Green and ordered to be recorded. And at a court held for said county October 7th 1816, Reubin Hutchison one of the Executors named in the last will and testament of William Mount dec'd by a writing under his hand renounced the burthen of the Execution thereof, which writing is admitted to record and likewise John Hutchison one of the Executors named in the last will and testament of William Mount dec'd came into cour and renounced the burthen of the execution thereof, and administration with the will annexed of the Estate of William Mount dec'd is granted to John Hutchison he having taken the oath prescribed and entered into and acknowledged a bond with security according to law. It appearing to the court tha tit is the wish of the widow of said Mount that the said Hutchison should *qualify as aforesaid.

Sunday's Obituary: Captain John Byrd Conner

Former Statistician of State Dead.  Capt. John B. Conner, former statistician of the state of Indiana, died at his home in Indianapolis.  He was within a few days of being eighty-one years old.  He had been identified with the Indiana farmer as editor and publisher for over thirty-seven years.  For nearly three years he had been in failing health, though continuing to attend to his business the most of the time.  He was troubled with gall stones, and later with an enlargement of the liver, which was followed by a sharp attack of heart disease, that was the immediate cause of his death.  His last illness was of two weeks' duration.

John Byrd Conner was born April 28, 1831, on the farm of his father, Willoughby Conner, a native of Prince William county, Virginia, who had entered and bought government land in that county in 1820.  The grandfather of John B. Conner was an Englishman, who emigrated to this country when fifteen years old and became a soldier under Washington in the Revolutionary War.

John B. Conner received his early education in a log schoolhouse two miles from his father's farm.  He afterward attended the Vernon seminary, and was a resident of Madison in 1847 when the old Madison & Indianapolis railroad was completed to Indianapolis.

Evansville Courier and Press (Indiana) - August 5, 1898 - John B. Conner, nominee for state statistician, the office which he now holds, entered the army of the Union as first lieutenant of Company A, twelfth Indiana infantry, and was afterward promoted to captain.  He served in the state legislature in 1897.  He is the author of the bill which provided for the establishment of the Indiana bureau of statistics.  He was chosen executive of this branch by Governor Porter and held the office two years, till it became an elective one.  In 1897 a vacancy occurred and he was appointed by Governor Mount to fill the place.  He has been connected with the Indiana Farmer for years.

Here's yet another example of why Chancery cases are a rich source of genealogical/historical information.  The following Will of Thomas Mount is copied in Fauquier County, VA's Chancery Case No. 1836-013 (online at the Library of Virginia Chancery Collection).  According to the staff at RELIC, this Will does NOT appear on the Prince William County Will Indexes!

I Thomas C. Mount of County of Prince William being of sound mind but infirm health do make this my last will and testament.  I desire that all my just debts be paid out of my Estate and the balance both real and personal I give to my sister Elizabeth W. G. Mount and I do also appoint Elizabeth W. G. Mount, Executrix of my Estate this 8^th day of January 1828.

At a Court held for P.Wm. County this 1^st day of September 1828.  This last will and testament of Thos. C. Mount, decd., was presented to the Court and it appearing to the Court, from their inspection and the evidence of two witnesses that the same will is in the hand writing of the said Thomas C. Mount, said will is admitted to record, and Elizabeth W. G. Mount the Executrix named in the last will and testament of Thos. C. Mount, decd. Came into Court and made oath to the same as according to law, and having taken the oath of an Executrix and performing what is usual in such cases Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

I Mary Mount of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia being in delicate health and being advised by my Physicians that it is important to my health to visit the southern country and whereas owing to the peculiar manner in which my Father William Mount devised his Estate to his children it is doubtful whether my Brother Thomas C. Mount administrator of my Father's Estate will be justified advancing me a sufficient quantity of money to carry me to the southern country and whereas also William Byrne owe the securities of my brother by reason of such an act may become liable as security of my brother for such malfeasance as administrator.  Now I Mary Mount, being anxious to secure said William Byrne against such liability as also to return to my brother Thomas C. Mount any money he may advance to carry me to the south do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say  I give to William Byrne of Fauquier County State of Virginia all my rights title and interest in and to the Personal Estate devised by my Father William Mount to secure him against any liability as the security of my brother Thomas C. Mount and if by reason of any malfeasance of my brother as administrator of my Father it should take my brothers interest in my Father's Estate and my portion of the personal property also to make William Byrne safe as security aforesaid it is my will and desire that he should have it, but if he the said William Byrne should not suffer by reason of his being security as aforesaid or if his hability should not consume the whole of my interest in order to save him harmless as security aforesaid, then it is my will and desire that my brother Thomas C. Mount should have as much of my estate as will satisfy him for the amount advanced to carry me to the south and the balance of my estate if any there should be after indemnifying said William Byrne as security and my brother Thomas C. Mount for the advancements made to me I desire may be given equally to all my brothers and sisters.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 4^th day of October in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and Twenty six.
