Wedding Wednesday: Walker / Lewis (1917)

LEWIS-WALKER

Miss Virginia Valentine Walker, youngest daughter of W. J. Walker, of Manassas, and Francis Montgomery Lewis were quietly married Wednesday at noon at the home of the bride in Manassas, in the presence of a small company of relatives and friends. Rev. J. F. Burks, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Manassas, performed the ceremony. Miss Bessie Jeffery Walker, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Dr. J. M. Lewis was best man.

Mr. Lewis is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Lewis, of near Manassas.

Among the out-of-town guests were: Miss Adelaide Elgin, of Aldie; Miss Anna L. Kite, of Liberty Mills, Orange, County; N. Moore, of Rectortown; Mrs. F. L. Shacklett, of Washingotn, and Miss Bessie Jeffery Walker, of the George Washington University Hospital, Washington.

MANASSAS, VA., December 18.--J. P. Leachman, treasurer of Prince William County, and his deputy, C. C. Leachman, will move their offices the first of the year from the National Bank Building to the office rooms in the M.I.C. Building, formerly occupied by Dr. R. E. Wine.

Dr. W. A. Newman yesterday entertained the members of the Medical Society of Prince William County at his residence on Main Street.

Miss Bessie Edmonds and Miss Katie Gilbrotzer, of Alexandria, were guests at the home of Mrs. L. E. Pope this week.

Mrs. Dennis O'Neil of Manassas recently visited her sister, Mrs. Sallie Armick at Barboursville. On Thursday night during the high wind the Armick home at that place was totally destroyed by fire, the family saving none of the household effects except clothing.

The Young Ladies' Bridge Club was entertained at the home of Miss Bessie Walker, on Main Street, to-day.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Watkins of Alexandria spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Wenrich.

Mrs. N. L. Turner, of The Plains, was the guest of her mother, Mrs. P. P Chapman, during the first of the week.

MANASSAS, Va., November 10 -- Manassas Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, meet at the chapter hall Wednesday afternoon.

A meeting of the Manassas Chapter of the American Red Cross was held at the town hall Monday evening, George G. Tyler presiding.

Lieutenant Everett L. Rice, of Fort Hamilton, N.Y., is visiting his mother, Mrs. W. M. Rice.

Mrs. Wade Carmack, of Bristol, Tenn, during the week was the guest of Mrs. Jacob L. Harrell.

Mrs. C. E. Nash is the guest of her daughters, Mrs. George Berger Cocke and Mrs. Robert W. Adamson, in Petersburg.

Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Lipscomb have had as their guests their son and Mr. Lipscomb's brother, W. Harold Lipscomb of New York City, and Charles E. Lipscomb, of Plainsfield, N.J.

Miss Margaret Worthington, of Charles Town, W. Va., spent the week in Manassas as the guest of Miss Isabel Kelley, while conducting Bible study classes under the auspices of the Gypsy Smith Prayer Circle.

Mrs. Clarence L. Hickerson of Rockville, Md. and Mrs. W. P. Rudasill of Culpeper were recent guests of Mr .and Mr.s D. J. Arrington.

Mr. and Mrs. Newman Walker, of Pittsburgh, Pa., recently visited Mr. Walker's father, W. J. Walker.  Mr. Walker and his bride made the trip to Manassas by automobile.

John T. Debell and his sister, Miss Tillie DeBell, have returned from Washington, where they paid a short visit to their brother, Lieutenant Arthur W. DeBell, medical corps., United States Army, who was traveling north from Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.

I EDWARD E. CARTER of Cloverland, Prince William County at this time laboring under a serious illness at Vermont of which I apprehend the consequence to be fatal, and being desirous of disposing of such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bestow on me, in the manner in which I wish it to go, in case I do not recover, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made.  Imprimis. I give devise and bequeath to my brother SHIRLY the whole of my tract of land called Cloverland, including the mill, with all the slaves, stocks of every kind, farming implements and all the rest of my personal property to him and his heirs forever, he paying all my just debts.  Item I give and devise to my brother CASSIUS, that tenement now occupied by MAY WASHINGTON under a lease for lives to him and heirs forever.  Item in testimony of the love and affection I have to my sister MARY WALKER I give and bequeath to her one thousand dollars to be paid her by my brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS in equal portions out of the property before given to them.  Item I desire that my brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS shall repay to my present overseer BAZIL TAYLOR in twelve months after my decease the sum of five hundred dollars, to enable him the better to provide for the wants of his family.  Lastly I constitute and appoint my two brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS Exors of this my last will and testament.  In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 20^th day of Nov. 1820.

This last will and testament of EDWD. E. CARTER decd. was presented to the Court and being fully proved by the oath of HENRY T. DIXON is ordered to be recorded & CHARLES SHIRLEY CARTER the Exor. named in the said last will and testament came into Court and made oath to the same according to law and performed what is usual in such cases certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
