This deed made and entered into this 15^th day of November 1871 between Emily E. Johnson of the one part, and F. A. Weedon, George W. Hixson, Francis M. Lewis, Henry C. Steers & Benjamin F. Lewis, Trustees for the Bethlehem Church of the second part all of the County of Prince William & state of Virginia, Witnesseth, that the said Emily E. Johnson hath this day sold to the said Trustees a certain lot or parcel of land (being a part of the land bought of Geo. W. Mitchell adjoining the land belonging to the heirs of Joseph Johnson) as site for a meeting house for the exclusive use of the old school or Primitive Baptist church called Bethlehem, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, and bounded as follows, viz., Beginning at A (on plat) a stone at the angle of the road a corner to entire lot thence along the west side of the road with a line of said lot S20’ W31 poles to B a stone S30 ½ W12 poles to C another stone in a line of the entire lot, thence leaving the road N29 ¼ W52 pole to D a large water oak & gum on the east side of a branch, thence w/i the said branch making the meanders thereof the boundary N11 ¼ W10 poles N23E15 poles, N46E12.32 poles to F w gum on the east bank of the branch, thence leaving the branch N68 ½ E7 poles to the beginning, containing two acres and nineteen poles, to have and to hold the said lot of land for the only proper use & behoof of the said Bethlehem Church, and I the said Emily E. Johnson do hereby warrant and defend the said lot of land against all claims or claim whatsoever.  Given under my hand and seal the date above written.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY. -- The daily attendance of persons at the bush meeting held recently in the grove near Gainesville was between three and five hundred. On last Tuesday 40 converts, varying in age from 12 to 80 years, were immersed.

From the Brentsville Advocate and Manassas Gazette we take the following items.

Mr. Edwin Nelson, of Dumfries Township, met with a painful accident a few days ago, which has disabled him from attending to his business for several days. He was cutting something overhead, when the axe glanced, the edge striking him near the eye, making a severe cut.

The Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad Company have advertised for proposals for the gradation and masonry of a branch of their road, to run from Brook's station to a point near Quantico in this county.

The friends of Dr. R. W. Wheat, late of the county, will be pleased to hear that his health has improved, and that he is building up a fine practice in South San Francisco, having concluded to remain there.

A primary meeting of the Conservative voters of Brentsville Township will be held on Saturday next, for the purpose of appointing ten delegates to attend the count convention.

Mr. O. P. Chappell has removed his saw mill from Sprigg's Ford to Manassas, and is also engaged in puting in a planning mill in connection with his other business.

A meeting for the purpose of choosing delegates to attend the Convention, next September court, will be held at Manassas on Saturday, August 27th.

Charles A. Dunnington, Esq., a native of the county, and late a member of Co. A., 4th Virginia cavalry, C.S.A., expects to leave for California this week.

The picnic given by the Stonewall Base Ball Club, of Manassas, last Saturday, was a most delightful affair, and was attended by the elite of the neighborhood.

Mr. J. F. Andrews has sold 50 acres of his land, in the lower part of the county, to Mr. Schlag of the U.S.A.

Mr. Wallace Hixon is building a neat dwelling at Manassas which he intends occupying himself.

The building of Mr. R. W. Merchant at Manassas is going rapidly forward, and will soon be finished.

Mr. A. S. Davis is building an addition to his tin shop, at Manassas to make room for his increasing business.

H. O. Claughton, Esq., of Alexandria, will address the people of the county on Monday (September court day) at Brentsville.

TRUSTEES' SALE OF LAND AND NEGROES.--Pursuant to the provisions of two deeds of trust, the one bearing date the first day of May, 1841, and the other the first day of September, 1843, executed to the subscribers for purposes therein mentioned, by John Hooe, Jr., late of Prince William County, both of which deeds are duly recorded in the Clerk's Office of the said County, we shall, on Monday, the 2nd day of November next, at Brentsville, proceed to sell, by public auction, for cash, the following property, to wit:

1. A TRACT OF LAND, lying and being in the county of Prince William, called and known by the name of "YORKSHIRE," adjoining the lands of Lovell Marders, Wm. J. Weir, and Wm. Brawner, containing about 1100 acres, and is the same land which was conveyed to said Hooe by Bushrod Washington and H. Turner.

2. Another tract of land, adjoining the above tract, called "LOCUST GROVE," containing --- acres, to which the said John Hooe, Jr. derived title from his father, the late Bernard Hooe, of Prince William County.

3. A TRACT OF LAND lying in said county of Prince William, on Occoquan run, adjoining the lands of Mrs. Kincheloe, Mrs. Hixon, and others, and contains about 400 acres.

4. The following SLAVES and their increase since 1st September, 1843, to wit: Reuben, Nancy, Lucinda, Thornton, Paris, Mary Ann, Bill, Sally, Laurinda, Betsy, Horace, Davy, and Richard. Such title only as is vested in the undersigned by the deeds aforesaid, will be conveyed to the purchaser; but it is believed that the title to all said property is unquestionable.

NOTICE. -- The public are hereby forewarned that the debt embraced in the deed of trust, under which the above lands are offered for sale, is usurious, and not binding upon the estate of Col. John Hooe, deceased; and that as the lands advertised have descended to Mrs. Virginia B. Mason, as a part of her separate estate, and are now in her possession, he will resist the recovery of possession of any of the lands that may be sold by the trustees in said trust, on the ground that the deed of trust is utterly void and of no effect.  As a purchaser at a Trustee's sale is a purchaser without warrant of title, and at his own risk, this notice has been deemed property.

Davis that were presented to our view by his Executrix, to Wit:

This deed made the 17 day of September 1915, between G. W. Hixson, party of the first part, and Frank Milstead party of the second part,

WITNESSETH: That for and in consideration of its value cash in hand paid by the said second party to the said first party, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said party of the first part doth by these presents bargain, grant, sell, release, convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part, with general warranty of title west half of lot Number 47, as designated in the plat and survey of West End Cemetery, adjacent to the town of Manassas, in the county of Prince William, the same to be used as a burial place for white persons only.

Witness the following signature and seal.

Society Saturday: Prince William Items: Rhoda Fewell

On Sunday morning last Rhoda Fewell was arrested at Manassas by officer Wallace Hixson on the charge of assaulting his wife on the night previous. He was tried before Justices Whiting and L. B. Butler, who sent him to jail for 12 months and in addition imposed on him a fine of $50. He was taken to Brentsville on Sunday evening. On Tuesday, his counsel, C. E. Nicol, esq., obtained a writ of habeas corpus from the Judge of the County Court, which was heard at 4 p.m. on that day. The Judge, after hearing the arguments of counsel, released the prisoner on the ground that the Justices had no right to try a case on Sunday.  The Commonwealth was represented by the Commonwealth's Attorney, E. E. Meredith, es., assisted by Judge Sinclair. The Commonwealth's Attorney as soon as the prisoner was discharged had him rearrested for the same offence and brought before Justice A. W. Sinclair, who sent him on to the grand jury and put his bail at $500. Fewell was unable to give the bail and consequently was committed to jail. He is also under arrest upon a peace warrent sued out by Mrs. Fewell.


[Lucien "Rhoda" Fewell is probably best known for the infamous 1872 murder of James Clark at the Brentsville jail.  A Civil War veteran, some have theorized that Fewell's "anger management" issues were symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ("PTSD"). ~cgl]

The social event of the season in Manassas was the marriage September 16 at 3 o'clock p.m. in the M. E. Church South of Miss Maude Nicol to Mr. Geo. S. Wilson of Fauquier county. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Geo. T. Taylor of Fauquier. The church was beautifully decorated and crowded with invited guests. An evergreen arch spanned the chancel, from which hung a marriage bell. As the wedding party entered the church Mrs. B. P. Bowen of Brentsville sang "Oh, Promise Me," accompanied by her daughter on the organ. Mr. D. B. Wilson, brother of the groom, was the best man, and Miss Grace Nicol, sister of the bride, was maid of honor.

The groomsmen and bridesmaids were Mr. Holtzman of Washington and Miss Hixson of Manassas, Mr. Compter of Front Royal and Miss Lyon of Manassas, Mr. Kendall of Fauquier and Miss Simpson of Manassas, Mr. Gibson and Miss Leache of Fauquier, and Mr. Weir of Manassas and Miss Kincheloe of Brentsville. The flower maids were Julia Nicol, the little daughter of Judge Nicol, and Basie Ransdell, both nieces of the bride. As the party retired from the church Miss Bowen of Brentsville played the wedding march. The bride received many beautiful presents of silver.

In the name of God amen I JOHN DYE JUNR. Of the County of Prince William & State of Virginia having my proper reason & memory do constitute this my last will and testament disallowing all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.  And first I recommend my soul to God who gave it, and as to my worldly property I do give and dispose of in the following manner.

Item I give unto my daughter SARAH LEE thirty pounds which she has already in her possession.

Item I give unto my daughter LYDIA PRIDMORE thirty pounds which she has already in her possession.

Item  I give unto my three sons namely JAMES, JOHN & DANIEL thirty pounds each, to be paid unto them as they come of age.

Item I give unto my beloved wife all the remainder of my estate both real and personal during her natural life, and after her death to be equally divided between my five children, or their heirs namely SARAH, DYDDA, JAMES, JOHN & DANIEL.  And I do hereby othorize and appoint my beloved wife MARY my Executrix & my friend RUTT JOHNSTON my Executor to this my last will and testament.  Signed sealed & pronounced this eighteenth day of March Anno Domi one thousand seven hundred & ninety eight.
