Wedding Wednesday: Walker / Lewis (1917)

LEWIS-WALKER

Miss Virginia Valentine Walker, youngest daughter of W. J. Walker, of Manassas, and Francis Montgomery Lewis were quietly married Wednesday at noon at the home of the bride in Manassas, in the presence of a small company of relatives and friends. Rev. J. F. Burks, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Manassas, performed the ceremony. Miss Bessie Jeffery Walker, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Dr. J. M. Lewis was best man.

Mr. Lewis is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Lewis, of near Manassas.

Among the out-of-town guests were: Miss Adelaide Elgin, of Aldie; Miss Anna L. Kite, of Liberty Mills, Orange, County; N. Moore, of Rectortown; Mrs. F. L. Shacklett, of Washingotn, and Miss Bessie Jeffery Walker, of the George Washington University Hospital, Washington.

This Deed made this 30^th day of January 1857 between Robt. B. MERCHANT of the one part and James ASHBY trustee of Mary Frances SHACKLETT wife of Richard D. SHACKLETT of the other part. Witnesseth that in consideration of the sum of one hundred and seventy five Dollars, the said Robert B. Merchant doth grant with general warranty unto the said James Ashby trustee as aforesaid all that tract of land or parcel of land known by the name of Raccoon Hill tract purchased by the said Merchant of George H. COCKRELL lying and being in the County of Prince William and bounded as follows to Wit. Beginning at a pine stump and planted stone corner to the entire tract thence 79.30 E 54 poles to a stake by a Spanish oak on a hill, thence S. 30.30 W 100 to a small Spanish oak by an old road, thence N 79.30 W 54 poles to a black oak in the out line, thence N 30.30 E 100 poles to the beginning containing thirty three acres and 3 roods, to the same more or less; the said James Ashby trustee as aforesaid, to hold the said property hereby conveyed, in the same manner, for the same purposes and upon the same conditions as he holds the property conveyed to him by the marriage contract between the said Richard D. Shacklett and Mary Frances his wife dated 2^nd day of February 1854 and of record in the Clerk’s office of the County Court of Prince William County.

I William C. MERCHANT a justice of the peace for the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia do certify that Robert B. Merchant, whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date on the 30^th day of January 1857, has acknowledged the same before me in my state aforesaid. Given under my hand this 30^th day of January 1857.

Several Lady Friends Remembered by the Testator in Small Bequests

The last will and testament of the late Redmon Foster, who died December 26, 1912, has just been probated.

The instrument, which is written in the testator's hand writing with an indelible pencil and upon common writing paper, contains an unsigned codicil by which he disposes of his wearing apparel, bed clothing and a few articles of furniture, to Miss Ella Fogle and to Miss Effie Hale the sum of $30.  After providing for the payment of his funeral expenses and all other just liabilities, he makes provision for the following legacies:  Mrs. Jas. R. Dorrell and Miss Lillian Jones, each $50; Mrs. Wm. E. Lipscomb, Mrs. Nettie Garrison, and Mayan Shacklett, each $50; Mrs. Herbert Tolson $30; and Misses Pocahontas Lynn, Faith Chapman, Lucy Harrison, Maude Hall, Stella Kesky and Violet Scott, each $30.  The remainder of the estate is bequeathed to Mrs. Jas. R. Dorrell and Miss Lillian Jones, share and share alike.  The will is dated December 4, 1912, and Thos. H. Lion is named as executor of the same.

It has been stated by some of the testator's closest friends, who have known him for a period of over fifty years, that he has some twenty or thirty thousand dollars in United States bonds besides other bonded assets.  We understand that none of the bonds, with the exception of $3,000, have yet been located.
