DEATH OF MRS. RUSSELL

Aged Independent Hill Resident Buried New Year's Day

Mrs. M. M. Russell died on Sunday at her home near Independent Hill. She had been ill about seven months and for three weeks had been in a critical condition. She was in her eightieth year.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at Oak Grove cemetery by Elder W.M. Smoot, of Occoquan, who took his text from the eleventh chapter of John. The pallbearers were Messrs. Andrew Kincheloe, Eli Kincheloe, Bence Cole, Charles A. Barbee, Thomas Holman and Robert Cornwell.

Mrs. Russell, who before marriage was Miss Jeannette Keys, was born December 8, 1844, at Occoquan. At the age of eleven she moved with her parents to their place near Nelson's mill. She was married to Mr. Russell, December 22, 1878, and up to the time of her death made her home within two miles of Independent Hill.

She is survived by  her husband and by three sons and a daughter, Messrs. Thomas M. and James M. Russell, of Canova; Mr. G. Cleveland Russell, of Agnesville,. and Mrs. Ruth Russell, of Minnieville. She also leaves ten grandchildren, one little grandchild (Walton, baby son of her granddaughter, Mrs. Max Weber), two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Abel, of Quantico, and Mrs. Nellie Posey, of Hoadly, and two brothers, Mr. Jack Keys, of Dumfries, and Mr. Evandon Keys, of Joplin.

This deed made this 8th day of February 1879 between Lawrence Cole and Jane his wife of the one part and John W. Chapman, Ezekiel Lynn and James M Barbee Trustees of Quantico Primitive Baptist Church and their successors in office all of Prince William County, State of Virginia. Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars, receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have given granted bargained and sold & conveyed, and do by these presents give grant bargain sell and convey unto the said parties of the second part and their successors in office the following described property, to wit: a tract of land lying and being situate near Coles store in the said County of Prince William and bounded as follows, Beginning at the forks of the road near the Union Church, thence running west with the Warranton road 210 feet, thence north 105 feet, thence east 210 feet to the Brentsville road, thence down said road south to the beginning containing one half acre more or less. To have and to hold the above described property unto the said parties of the second part and their legal successors in office forever. But the said land is conveyed with the distinct understanding that a House of Public Worship shall be built thereon by the said parties of the second part to be used and applied for purposes of worship by the congregation of Quantico Primitive Baptist Church and for no other purposes.

I John C. Barbee being of sound mind and memory but am aware of the uncertainty of life and certainty of death am desirous of arranging such worldly effect as God has blessed me with in the following order.

To Wit, I give and bequeath to my brothers Andrew D. Wroe and James M. Barbee and my sister Elizabeth W. Barbee and Mary C. Barbee my boy Henry and all my right, lotte [?] and interest in boy Marshall; but should any or either of said distributees die without a child, said property is to go to the survivors, but my Mother is to have the use and benefit of Henry during her natural life but in no wise or respect is the boy Henry to be under the control or management of my Father. My brothers are to have my wearing apparel, my nephew and Andrew C. Wroe is to have my watch, my mother and sisters Elizabeth W. Barbee and Mary C. Barbee is to have all my money after paying all necessary expenses.  My sister Elizabeth W. Barbee is to have my trunk.  I hereby constitute and appoint Andrew D. Wroe my Executor to this my last will and testament. At a court of Quarterly Sessions held for Prince William County on the 1st day of August 1853

This last will and testament of John C. Barbee was proved according to law by the oaths of Noah Fowler and William A. Fowler subscribing witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Andrew D. Wroe the Executor therein named who made oath and together with John C. Weedon his security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of one thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted to the said Andrew D. Wroe for obtaining letters of administration on the said decedents Estate in due form.

CAPTAIN W. F. WILLIAMS. – Bristol, VA, April 6.  Captain W. F. Williams, sixty-six years old, a native of Brentsville, Prince William county, VA, died here to-night of pneumonia.  He was captain of Company A, Fourth Virginia Regiment of the Confederate army.  For many years he was prominently connected with the railroads here.  Two sons and three daughters survive.  His only surviving sister, Mrs. Somerville, resides at Manassas.

APPOINTED DEPUTY SHERIFF. MANASSAS, VA., November 4. Judge J. B. T. Thornton has appointed J. P. Kerlin of Nokesville, deputy sheriff of Prince William County.  Mr. Kerlin was selected by Charles A. Barbee, sheriff, to succeed the late John M. Hooe.  McDuff Green, of Aden, has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Kerlin's resignation as supervisor from the Brentsville District.

Daily National Intelligencer – July 14, 1825

BRENTSVILLE, VA., JULY 8, 1825 – Joseph Bergess, who was sentenced to be hanged, by the Superior Court of Law for Prince William county, held in October last, for the murder of Charles Gollyhorn, was executed near Brentsville, this day, in presence of a large number of spectators, who had assembled to witness the scene.

Pittsfield Sun – July 4, 1867

The death is announced near Brentsville, Prince William County, Va., of Wm. Washington, aged 74 years, nephew of Col. Washington of the Revolutionary army, and third cousin of Gen. George Washington.  His brother, Col. Henry Washington, of the District of Columbia, survives.  The deceased served with distinction throughout the war of 1812.
