Newspaper Tidbit: Jail Escape: James Cornwell

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, to wit.

ALEXANDER HENDERSON, one of the Commonwealth's Justices of the Peace of the said County, to all Sheriffs, Mayors, Bailiffs, Constables and Headboroughs, within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

WHEREAS complaint is made to me this day, upon the oath of Samuel Davis, that James Cornwell, laborer, who was lately committed to the jail of the said county of Prince William, by warrant from Henry Washington, a Justice of the Peace for the said county, on suspicion of felony, did on the night of the twenty-sixth instant did forcibly escape from the said jail, and is now going at large. These are therefore, in the name of the Commonwealth, to require you, and every of you, in your respective counties, cities, towns and precincts, to make diligent search, by way of hue and cry for the said James Cornwell, and, having found, to sieze [sic] and retake, and safely convey, or cause him to be safely conveyed, to the jail of the said county of Prince William, there to be kept until he shall be thence discharged by due course of the law.

I EDWARD E. CARTER of Cloverland, Prince William County at this time laboring under a serious illness at Vermont of which I apprehend the consequence to be fatal, and being desirous of disposing of such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bestow on me, in the manner in which I wish it to go, in case I do not recover, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made.  Imprimis. I give devise and bequeath to my brother SHIRLY the whole of my tract of land called Cloverland, including the mill, with all the slaves, stocks of every kind, farming implements and all the rest of my personal property to him and his heirs forever, he paying all my just debts.  Item I give and devise to my brother CASSIUS, that tenement now occupied by MAY WASHINGTON under a lease for lives to him and heirs forever.  Item in testimony of the love and affection I have to my sister MARY WALKER I give and bequeath to her one thousand dollars to be paid her by my brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS in equal portions out of the property before given to them.  Item I desire that my brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS shall repay to my present overseer BAZIL TAYLOR in twelve months after my decease the sum of five hundred dollars, to enable him the better to provide for the wants of his family.  Lastly I constitute and appoint my two brothers SHIRLEY and CASSIUS Exors of this my last will and testament.  In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 20^th day of Nov. 1820.

This last will and testament of EDWARD E. CARTER decd. was presented to the Court and being proved by the oath of EDMUND BROOKE is ordered to be certified.

At a Court held for said County January 7^th 1822.

This last will and testament of EDWD. E. CARTER decd. was presented to the Court and being fully proved by the oath of HENRY T. DIXON is ordered to be recorded & CHARLES SHIRLEY CARTER the Exor. named in the said last will and testament came into Court and made oath to the same according to law and performed what is usual in such cases certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

Wednesday's Child: Damewood / Dunnington / Latimer / Washington

Alexandria Gazette – November 10, 1832 – DIED, In Dumfries, Va., after a long and painful illness, in the 10^th year of his age, Francis H. Dunnington, of that place. The death of this promising child has left a void in the heart of his mother that time nor the things of this world can never fill.

Alexandria Gazette – July 8, 1842 – On Wednesday, the 22d ult., James H. Latimer, youngest son of Samuel and Charlotte A. Latimer, of Prince William County, Virginia, aged eleven months. The parents mourn the loss of an interesting child, but they have this comfortable assurance, that their loss is his eternal gain; for Christ said: “Suffer little Children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.”

Alexandria Gazette – August 11, 1873 – After a severe illness of two days, on the 15^th ultimo, in the 9^th month of her age, Camelia Lee Washington, infant daughter of William T. and Fannie V. Washington, at Park Gate, their residence, in Prince William co.

Alexandria Gazette – April 17, 1875 – Arthur Damewood, a little ten year old son of Wm. Damewood, living near Groveton, in the upper part of Prince William, was instantly killed on Saturday last by the explosion of an old shell which he was rolling about the yard. It is said the poor little fellow's entrails were entirely torn out, and his body was terribly mangled.

Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, MD) - October 7, 1853

THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS REWARD.  -- Ran away from the subscriber, living near Buckland, Prince William County, Va., on Sunday the 25th inst., Negro Man THORNTON, about 30 years of age, and stout; very dark; 5 feet 7 or 8 inches in height;wide mouth, thick lips,  high cheek bones; slow of speech, and much inclined to laugh or smile when spoken to; little or no beard, and considerable stoop about the neck and shoulders.  When last seen had on a white felt hat and blue frock coat.

--$50 will be given if taken in any part of this State; $100 in any other Slave State; $200 in Pennsylvania, and $300 in any other Free State, provided he is secured in jail so I get him again.
