In the name of God Amen; I Grandison S. Tansill of Fauquir, State of Virginia, being perfectly sound in mind and memory, and influenced by no other desire than to do what is just, right and proper; do make this my last Will, and Testament; as followd, to wit. ~~

I do give and bequeath all my effects both real and personal (after paying all my just debts) to my wife Sarah Catharine to dispose of as she may deem fit; and do hereby appoint my wife the said Sarah Catharine the Executrix of this my last will and testament.  Witness my hand and seal this Fifteenth day of January Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Seven.

This is to certify that I have this day sold to B. F. Pattie all my interest in a crop of wheat on Carters Green cultivated by Jimmy Smith for the sum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged as Witness my hand and seal this 23d June 1875.

Newspaper Tidbit: PWCo Congressional Meeting (1870)

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY CONGRESSIONAL MEETING.--At a meeting of Conservatives of Prince William county, held at the Court House in Brentsville, on Monday the 5th inst., Allen Howison, was called to the chair and D. W. Whiting and R. M. Waters appointed Secretaries. On motion of Charles E. Sinclair, the chairman appointed a committee of three from each Township to select five delegates from each of the Townships to the Congressional Convention to be held in Alexandria on Friday the 29th inst.

The Committee retired and reported the names of the following gentleman for delegates.

Brentsville Township--James F. Clark, W. J. Manuel, E. E. Meredith, J. M. Sinclair, W. W. Thornton.

Coles Towhship--John W. Davis, Meredith W. Horton, John H. Purcell, M. B. Weedon, Wm. M. Lynn

Dumfries Township--J. F. Wheat, G. E. Keys, A. H. Fucchsthal, G. W. Dunnington, Richard Stonnell

Occoquan Township--Dr. Powell, J. V. Nash, Z. A. Kankey, Vernon Davis

Manassas Township--T. J. Leachman, G. O. Donahue, F. A. Weedon, Dr. L. Alexander

Gainesville Township--Samuel Simpson, Col. Berkeley, George S. Hamilton, John T. Gundiff

Which report was concurred in. On motion of James F. Clark the chairman, secretaries, and committee were added to the list of delegates. It was resolved that Charles E. Sinclair be chairman of the delegation and that an authenticated copy of the proceedings be furnished to the chairman by the Secretaries; it was further resolved that a report of the proceedings of this meeting be published in the county papers and the district papers be requested to copy. The meeting, on motion then adjourned.

At a meeting held at the Court House on Monday last, for the purpose of organization of the Conservative party, Mr. F. A. Weedon was called to the chair and E. E. Meredith appointed secretary.

Mr. B. F. Lewis was appointed county superintendent.

Sunday's Obituary: Colonel Norborne Berkeley

BERKELEY - Entered into rest at Evergreen, Prince William county, Va. on January 12th, 1911, COLONEL NORBORNE BERKELEY, son of Lewis Berkeley and of Frances Calendar Noland, his wife, of Aldie, Loudoun county, Va.

Colonel Berkeley was born on March 31st, 1828, and was therefore nearly eighty-three years old at the time of his death.  He was educated at the Episcopal High School and the Virginia Military Institute, where he graduated in 1848.

Entering the service of the Confederacy as major of the Eighth Virginia Regiment in the early summer of 1861, he served with great distinction throughout the war, and rose to the rank of colonel.  Just before the end of the war he was brevetted brigadier-general.

He married Lavinia Hart, daughter of Dr. Carter Berkeley and of Mary Randolph Spottswood Brooke, his wife, and leaves four sons -- Edmund Spottswood, of Van Vleck, Texas; Norborne, of Pendleton, Oregon; Charles Carter, of Seattle, Washington, and William Noland, of Annapolis, Md.

Colonel Berkeley's death will bring distress to a large circle of relatives and friends.

Mr. Weems, George William Fitzhugh, Esq. Merchant of Brentsville, Prince William County, to Miss Sarah S. B. Henry, daughter of the late Edward Henry, Esq. of Northumberland County, Virginia.



Alexandria Gazette (Alexandria, VA) - March 5, 1834 - MARRIED, on Thursday evening, 27th ultimo, at Mount Pleasant, Prince William County, Va., by the Rev. Mr. Berkley, Howison Hooe, Esq. of Prince William County, to Miss Catharine, daughter of Daniel McLean, deceased, of Alexandria D.C.

On Thursday evening last, by the Rev. Jessee E. Weems, Mr. John Fountain, to Miss Mary Patterson, daughter of Jessee Rossin, Esq., all of Prince William County, Virginia.

Newspaper Tidbit: Conservative Meeting

CONSERVATIVE MEETING.—At a meeting held in Brentsville, Prince William county, Va., on Monday, January 6, 1868, C. W. C. Dunnington, Esq., was called to the Chair, and Dr. Carter Berkeley appointed Secretary.

The Chairman explained the object of the meeting to be to organize the Conservative party of the county, in accordance with the recommendation of the State Executive Committee.

On motion of Col. Nicol, the Chair appointed Messrs. Allen Howison, Lawrence Cole, Crawford Cushing, and John Hammill a committee to report suitable persons as committees of the four magisterial districts.

After consultation, the committee reported the following names, to wit:

Dist. No. 1 – Edwin Nelson and Dr. M. B. Weedon.
Dist. No. 2 – Dr. M. Ish and Colonel Basil Brawner.
Dist. No. 3 – F. A. Weedon and William Bryan.
Dist. No. 4 – Capt. J. E. Herrell, and Col. Edmund Berkeley.

On motion, it was, Resolved, That the committee have power to fill any vacancies which may occur in their body.  The proceedings were ordered to be published in the Alexandria Gazette and Richmond Enquirer.  The meeting then adjourned.
