Messrs. Editors:

For the benefit of your correspondent who signs himself "Pottenger," and who wishes to find the name of the wife of Joshua Ferguson, I send the following:

Elijah McWiliffe, the immigrant, came with his family to America from England with five sons -- Moses, Aaron, Robert, Charles, Nathaniel -- and three daughters -- Sarah, ---, --- (Book 4, Nelson County Records).

Nathaniel Wickcliffe, late of Prince William county, State of Virginia, died in 1790 intestate; land passed to his next of kin, to wit: John Kincheloe, Daniel Kincheloe, Cardius Kincheloe and Dorcas, his wife; Robert Kincheloe, William Wheatley and Elizabeth, his wife; Presley Smith and Nancy, his wife; Joshua Ferguson and Mary, his wife; Arrington Wickcliffe, Moses Wickcliffe, Robert Wickcliffe and Sarah, his wife; Henry Davis and Mary, his wife; who sell and convey it to Charles Wickcliffe, of Nelson county, Kentucky, and Robert Wickliffe, brother of said Nathaniel, who was heir at law of said Robert Wickcliffe, deceased; land granted to said Robert Wickcliffe bearing date June 1, 1782.

12 June 1809; proved 07 Aug 1809

In the name of God Amen I SUSANNAH THARP of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia being sick and weak of body but blessed be God of perfect sence and memory do ordain and appoint this my last will and testament and first I do give and recommend with hope my soul to God and my body to be decently buried by my Executors hereafter mentioned.  Item it is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid and then the whole residue of my estate be equally divided amoungst my two children viz. JOHN STEWART and NANCY CHICK.  Viz. three negro men called and known by the name of JACOB, JESSE and RICHARD.  I also give and bequeth unto my beloved children JOHN STEWART and NANCY CHICK all my stock of horses cattle sheep and hogs together with household and kitchen furniture and I do appoint JOHN FERGUSON my hole and sole Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disannuling all former wills made by me and declaring this only to be my last.  In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 12^th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine.

Negro boy, calls himself Joe Tibbs, says he belongs to Mr. John G. Bealle, of Fauquier county, Va.;

also, a negro Peter Whittlesey, says he belongs to Mr. Bernard George, of Fauquier county, Va.;

also, a negro Addison Walker, says he belongs to John Marshall, of Clarke county, Va.;

also, negro Dennis calls himself Dennis Walker says he belongs to Robert Hudgins, of Fauquier county, Va.;

also, negro Washington Tyler, says he belongs to Washington Ferguson, of Loudoun county, Va.;

also, negro man Geo. Banes says he belongs to Mrs. Polly Elgin, of Loudoun county, Va.;

also, negro man Thomas Addison, says he belongs to J.H. Harding of Loudoun county, Va.;

also, negro Milton Thornley, says he belongs to John Marshall, Clarke county, Va.;

also, negro Beverly Harrison, says he belongs to Bernard George, of Fauquier county, Va.;

also, negro Lawrence Walker, says he belongs to Robert Hudgins, of Fauquier county, Va.;

also, negro Adam Moore, says he belongs to Patrick Smith, Fauquier county, Va.;

also, negro Leonard Jones, says he belongs to Dennis Johnson, of Fairfax county, Va.;

also, negro John Wormley, says he belongs to Robert Horner, of Prince William county, Va.;

also, mulatto man John Williams, says he belongs to John Harris, of Fairfax county, Va.

The owners of the above named negroes (if any) are requested to come forward, prove property, pay charges, and take them away -- otherwise, they will be disposed of according to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided.

Prince William County Will Book H, pg. 250

7 Jan 1797; proved 5 Feb 1798

In the name of God amen I WILLIAM DAVIS of Prince William County & state of Virginia late of Charles in Maryland (having my proper reason and memory) do constitute this my last will and testament, disallowing all other wills & testaments by me heretofore made & First.

I recommend my soul to God who have it, and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.

I give unto my son JOSEPH five shillings and no more of my estate he having had a full share.

Item I give unto my son ISAAC five shillings and no more of my estate he having had a full share.

Item I give unto my grand son ROGER one heifer two years old.

Item I give unto my grand daughter ELIZABETH one heifer two years old.

Item my will and desire is that my son WILLIAM be sent to school three years at the expense of my estate.

Item my will is that the rest of my estate should be kept together until my son WILLIAM arrives to the age of twenty one years and then to be equally divided among my five youngest children namely ELIZABETH, ALLIN, SARAH, NANCY, and WILLIAM, and I do appoint my friend DAVID WILSON SCOTT & my son ALLIN my Executors of this my last will and testament.  Signed sealed and pronounced this 7^th day of January Anno Domini one thousand and ninety seven.
