Newspaper Tidbit: Alexander Bennett "Ben" Sanders

The careers of few professional ball players are more interesting than that of Sanders, the strapping Philadelphia pitcher who is paired with Clements. He comes of a highly respectable family and resides at Sudley, Prince William county, Va., where he was born. He graduated from Roanoke college with high honors, and left there with the intention of studying for the ministry. He taught a country school for one year, and joined the Philadephias in the spring of 1888.  Last winter he attended Vanderbilt university, Nashville, Tenn., where he is studying to become a civil engineer. Sanders, who is 28 years of age, made a phenomenal record as a pitcher for the Carthapins, a Virginia country nine, which defeated some of the best amateur clubs of the country in 1885 and 1886.  ~ Baltimore Herald.

Ben Sanders (Feb. 16, 1865 - Aug. 29, 1930) is buried in the Sudley United Methodist Church cemetery.

This Deed made and entered into this 28th day of January 1896 by and between Henry C. Cushing and Clara P. Cushing, his wife, parties of the first part, and A. H. Compton, C. F. Brower, Wm. M. Wheeler, F. H Sanders, and A. J. Ayres, Trustees of the Sudley Methodist Episcopal Church South parties of the second part, all of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia; Witnesseth: In consideration of their affection and Christian regard for the Church members and officials of the said Sudley Church and their desire to aid them in the establishment of a cemetery at their place of Worship, the said parties of the first part have given, granted and conveyed, and by these presents do give, grant and convey to the above named Trustees and their successors in office with general warranty, a lot of land adjoining the lot on which the Sudley Church Building now stands, Beginning at A. a cedar tree near the corner of Fetzer and the Church lot, thence with said lot S. 88 E. 18 poles to a stake on the North side of the Sudley and Manassas Road, thence with the said road S. 30 W. 18 poles to a stake on said road, thence N. 86 W. 19 poles to a stake in Mr. Cushing's field, thence N. 4 E 17 poles to the beginning and containing two acres and two poles. 

In Trust that the said land shall be used kept and maintained as a place of burial for the dead, subject to the control of the Methodist Episcopal Church South under the discipline usage and ministerial appointments of said Church from time to time authorized and declared by the General Conference of said church and the annual Conference within whose bounds the said premises are situate.

OBITUARY. On Monday, June 21st, 1875, at his residence, Mount Pleasant, in Prince William co., Va., G. W. SANDERS, esq., in the 44th year of his age. The author of this obituary had known Mr. Sanders for several years, and always felt for him a sincere friendship and regard. Amiable and genial in his intercourse with his friends, by his sparkling and ready humor and intelligent and agreeable converse, he was the life and soul of the social circle in which he was intimate. By great and indefatigable industry and energy of character he had amassed previous to his death a comfortable independence, and his helping hand was always outstretched to give employment to the poor and needy. Hospitable to all and kind, generous and social to a fault, he was an affectionate husband, indulgent father, an upright citizen and an honest man. "Few know him but to love him, few named him but to praise." Stricken down by a disease which baffled all medical skill, and had been preying for some time on a constitution naturally weak and delicate, and bearing it with patience and resignation, he gradually sunk under its influence, and calmly, quietly and without a struggle, our friend George W. Sanders passed away from earth to the eternal world. Over his faults, whatever they may have been -- (for we all have them) -- let us cast the mantle of oblivion, and endeavor to imitate his many virtues and noble qualities. May that God "who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb" watch over and protect the widowed mother and children, and may we all so live as he did that it may be said of us in the language of holy writ, "The liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things he shall stand" and in addition those other words of the great English poet:

"A wit's a feather and a chief's a rod;
An honest man's the noblest work of God."

The undersigned being next of kin to R. A. Townsend of Prince William County Va., who recently departed this life intestate, being credibly informed by disinterested neighbors and friends that it was his purpose to devise his estate to his wife, and that he had even gone so far as to have a will drawn to that effect, and that he had not executed the same because another measure was in contemplation which if executed might accomplish a like purpose, and at the same time free him from care and labors during the remainder of his lifetime. For these reasons and also because of the faithful and wifely ministrations of his widow through his protracted suffering as a wounded Confederate Veteran, it is our purpose in the execution of this paper to release to her the said Julia A. Townsend widow of the said R. A. Townsend dec’d. any and all interest that we may have in his belongings of every nature and kind whatsoever, to have and to hold for her sole use and benefit and to this end we jointly and severally pledge ourselves our heirs and &c. as is evidenced by the signatures and seals affixed this ____ day of ____ 1901.
