MANASSAS GAP RAILROAD COMPANY -- 

The subscribers in the stock of this Company are hereby notified, that an installment of $3 upon each share of said stock, is required to be paid, on the 1st day of January next, and that a further installment of $1 upon each share is required to be paid on the 1st day of each succeeding month, for the next ensuing eleven months.

Payments will be made by the Stockholders residing in Alexandria, into either of the Banks of the town, and in the country, to the following agents, viz:

For the County of Fauquier -- To Messrs Samuel T. Ashby, Robert Beverley, Daniel Morgan, and Alfred Rector.

For the County of Prince William -- To Mr. Thomas B. Gaines.

For the Count of Warren -- to Messrs. Samuel Richardson, William Cook, and William Miller.

This deed made and entered into the 8th day of Decr 1883 between Lawrence Cole and Jane Cole his wife of the first part and William J. Ashby of the second part all of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of seventy five dollars in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the party of the first part have this day bargained and sold to the party of the second part a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Prince William containing sixty two acres more or less adjoining the lands of S. B. Herrell, John G. Taylor, Louis H. Greybill & others to have and to hold the above described tract or parcel of land unto the said William J. Ashby his heirs & c. forever. As witness our hands and seals this 8th day of December 1883.

This Deed made this 30^th day of January 1857 between Robt. B. MERCHANT of the one part and James ASHBY trustee of Mary Frances SHACKLETT wife of Richard D. SHACKLETT of the other part. Witnesseth that in consideration of the sum of one hundred and seventy five Dollars, the said Robert B. Merchant doth grant with general warranty unto the said James Ashby trustee as aforesaid all that tract of land or parcel of land known by the name of Raccoon Hill tract purchased by the said Merchant of George H. COCKRELL lying and being in the County of Prince William and bounded as follows to Wit. Beginning at a pine stump and planted stone corner to the entire tract thence 79.30 E 54 poles to a stake by a Spanish oak on a hill, thence S. 30.30 W 100 to a small Spanish oak by an old road, thence N 79.30 W 54 poles to a black oak in the out line, thence N 30.30 E 100 poles to the beginning containing thirty three acres and 3 roods, to the same more or less; the said James Ashby trustee as aforesaid, to hold the said property hereby conveyed, in the same manner, for the same purposes and upon the same conditions as he holds the property conveyed to him by the marriage contract between the said Richard D. Shacklett and Mary Frances his wife dated 2^nd day of February 1854 and of record in the Clerk’s office of the County Court of Prince William County.

AGED 116 YEARS

Washington, Aug. 12 -- A colored woman named Chloe Ashby died in this city yesterday, who is said to have been 116 years old.  Her relatives say that she was born in 1768 on the farm of Gen. Henderson in Dumfries, Va., and that she lived as a slave until 1851, when she purchased her freedom.  She was the mother of seven children, two of whom survive her -- sons aged 79 and 71 respectively.

Sunday's Obituary: Lynn

Alexandria Gazette (Alexandria, Va) – May 26, 1830 -- Departed this life the 19^th inst. in the 48^th year of her age, after a severe and long affliction, which she bore with Christian fortitude, Mrs. Sarah A. Lynn, consort of Capt. Joseph R. Lynn, of Fairview, Prince William county Virginia.  In her death her husband lost a dear companion and her children a tender and affectionate mother, and the Baptist Church a worthy member.

Alexandria Gazette – September 20, 1869 -- DIED.  At Gordonsville, August 30^th, 1869, Lucian Ashby, son of Milton and Mary F. Lynn, aged 1 year, 11 months and 4 days.  “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

Richmond Times Dispatch (Richmond, Va) – July 23, 1908 -- Warrenton, Va., July 22 – Mrs. Ann M. Lynn, aged eighty-eight, died here last night at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. S. W. Maphis.  She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. S. J. Conway, and three sons, Rev. Frank A. Strother, A. W. Strother, of this place, and Henry H. Lynn, of Prince William, the latter a stepson.

Deed: Georgie LYNN, et al to Louisianna SULLIVAN

I thought this Deed was especially interesting because it mentions the half acre set aside for the Cole family cemetery in Independent Hill.  It also lists the "surviving heirs at law" of the will of Lawrence Cole (one of whom, Earl Lynn, is his grandson and my grandfather).

This deed made this 14^th day of April, 1933, by and between GEORGIE LYNN, widow, ELIZABETH ASHBY, widow, MOLLIE HOWELL, and SAMUEL B. HOWELL, her husband, P.M. COLE and MAGGIE O. COLE, his wife, and EARL LYNN, parties of the first part, (the said Georgie Lynn, Elizabeth Ashby, Mollie Howell, P.M. Cole, and Earl Lynn being all of the surviving heirs at law of LAWRENCE COLE, deceased), and LOUISIANNA SULLIVAN, party of the second part:

WITNESSETH, that, for and in consideration of the sum of ten dollars to them in hand paid, and other valuable considerations, receipt whereof is here acknowledged, the said parties of the first part have granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and convey, with general warranty of title, unto the said party of the second part the following described lot or parcel of land, to-wit:

All of that certain lot or parcel of land lying and being situate in Coles Magisterial District, Prince William County, Virginia, adjoining the lands of Sullivan and Oleyar and being the second one-half acre of land referred to in the first paragraph of the will of the late Lawrence Cole, recorded in Will Book T Prince William County Clerk’s office; less and except, however, so much of the said one-half acre of land as is now fenced as a burying ground the same being a Lot 30 feet or acre.  The said parties of the first part reserve for themselves and their heirs the right of ingress and agree to and from the said lot that is excepted from this conveyance through the present entrance on the Independent Hill-Joplin Road.
