I William Crosen of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia do hereby make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say -- First, I desire that all my just debts and funeral expences may be paid out of the proceeds of the sale of such part or parts of my estate as my hereinafter named Executrix may choose to dispose of for that purpose.

2ndly. After the payment of all my said debts, I give and bequeath to my wife Susan Crosen the whole of the remainder of my estate of every nature kind and discription whatever, to be enjoyed by her forever; but nevertheless -- should any part thereof be remaining at her death, I desire that the same shall be equally divided between my children. 

Lastly, I constitute my said wife Susan Crosen sole Executrix of this my last will and testament, requiring no security at her hands whatever. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this sixth day of September in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred & thirty two.

THIS DEED made this 20th day of September, in the year 1902; between Henry A. Myer and Irene E, his wife, William H. Cather and Mary E, his wife, Benjamin N. Merchant and May B. his wife and John B. Pridmore, the heirs at law of Benson L. Pridmore decd. of the first part, and Henry J. Ayres, of the second party;

Witnesseth:- that the said parties of the first part in consideration of the sum of One thousand six hundred dollars in hand paid to them by the said Ayers, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have given, granted, bargained and sold and do by these presents give, grant, bargain, sell and convey with general warranty, unto the said Ayers, all that certain tract or parcel of land lying and being situate in the county of Prince William, containing 164-3/4 acres, and is composed of the following tracts of land, to wit:

1st. a tract of land lying in the said county, known as the "Stone House property" on both sides of the Warrenton and Alexandria turnpike, and adjoining the lands of Henry F. Lynn, James Robinson, Martin Matthew, and others, and on the east of Sudley Mill and Manassas road and containing 137 acres more or less; and is the same land conveyed to the said Benson L. Pridmore decd. by George E. Starbuck by deed of bargain and sale recorded in the county court of the said county in Liber 33 page 147.

2nd. A certain tract of land lying in the said county on Youngs Branch, and containing 21 acres and 31 poles, and is the same land conveyed to the said Benson L. Pridmore decd. by Q. L. Sanford, by deed of bargain and sale recorded in the said county in Liber 32 page 614, and

3rd. A part of the tract of land known as "Rosefield" of which John D. Dogan died seized and possessed, and contains 6-1/2 acres more or less and is the same land conveyed to the said Benson L. Pridmore decd. by John Cross and wife by deed of bargain and sale recorded in the said county court in Liber 34 page 509.

And the parties of the first part covenant that they have the right to convey the said tract of land, that they have done no act to encumber the same, and that they will execute such further assurances as may be requisite.  Witness the following signatures and seals.

This Indenture made this twenty seventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Six between John Dye Senr. of the County of Prince William and State of Virginia and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and Benjamin Predmore of the other part Witnesseth that the said John Dye for and in consideration of two hundred and ninety one pounds of Lawful money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Benjamin Predmore the receipt whereof the said John Dye doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell alien and confirm unto the said Benjamin Predmore his heirs and assigns forever, one hundred and fifty acres of land the same being a part of the land I purchased of William Matthews which was devised to him by his father and purchased it from Will Bean to whom a Patent issued in the year 1726 for 453 acres lying in the County of Prince William and bounded as followeth Viz.

Beginning at a Box Oak marked W, C, supposed to be in a line of the Patent thence N32, W153 pole, to a large red oak thence N 31 1/2-W163 pole to a Stone in the Dumfries Road in the angle of a large red & white oak, thence up the said Road N75 W22 pole thence S26 3/4 W133 pole to the South line of the Patent, Thence with the said line S30 E113 pole to a small hickory supposed to be near where the original original corner stood Thence N84 1/2 East 147 1/2 pole to the first station. With all and singular the appurtenances in any wise belonging or appertaining to the same as fully as if the same were herein mentioned and expressed.  To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with all and singular the appurtenances to the said Benjamin Predmore his heirs and assigns forever.

And the said John Dye doth hereby covenant for himself his heirs Executors, and admrs. that it shall and may be lawfull for the said Benjamin Predmore peaceably and quietly to enter or hold and enjoy the said tract or parcel of land free from the lawful let hindrance or interruption of him the said John Dye or Elizabeth his wife or any person or persons claiming by under or in trust for him her or any of them and shall so remain free defended and indemnified from and against all former alienations, gifts, sales, mortgages and charges had or suffered by the said John Dye or Elizabeth his wife or by his or her ancestors or any of them. And the said John Dye for himself and his heirs the said tract or parcel of land and every part thereof against him and his heirs and against all and every person or persons whatsoever to the said Benjamin Predmore his heirs and assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents.  In Witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written.

The Commonwealth of Virginia, to Alexander Bruce and Charles Ewell Gentlemen, Greeting: Whereas John Dye Senr. and Elizabeth his wife by their certain Deed of Bargain & Sale dated the 27th day of March 1806 have sold and conveyed unto Benj. Predmore the fee simple estate of and in one hundred and fifty one acres situate in the County of Prince William and Commonwealth aforesaid; and whereas the said Elizabeth Dye cannot Conveniently travel to the County Court of Prince William aforesaid, to make acknowledgement of the same, therefore power is hereby given unto you or any two of you, to receive the acknowledgment which the said Elizabeth Dye shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid, contained in the said Deed which is hereto annexed; and you are therefore commanded that you do call and cause to come before you the said Elizabeth Dye and examine her privily and apart from her said husband, whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily, without the persuasions or threats of her said husband and whether she be willing the same should be recorded in the County Court of Prince William aforesaid; and when you have taken her acknowledgment and examined her as aforesaid, that you distinctly and openly certify the Justices of our said County Court thereof, under your seals, sending there this writ. Society Saturday: Tournament (1860)

A TOURNAMENT was held last Tuesday in the neighboring county of Prince William at the store of Wm. H. Keys. A large number were present. The successful knights were Jas. S. Cole, who named Miss Julia Tansil Queen of Love and Beauty; S. F. Davis, who named Miss Jennie Carney, First Maid of Honor; Jas. V. Nash, who named (per Montgomery Tansil) Miss Bettie Cockerell, Second Maid; and Maj. Jas. R. Purcell who named Miss Mollie Pridmore, Third Maid. The charge to the Knights was delivered by James E. Williams.

In connection with the tournament a cotillion party was given which passed off very creditably and was continued the next day (Wednesday). Much satisfaction was expressed at the manner in which the host (Mr. Wm. H. Keys) discharged his arduous duties. The occasion was one long to be remembered by all who took part in it.

Wedding Wednesday: Mary Belle (Pridmore) Merchant / Benjamin Merchant

You never know what you're going to find when sifting through chancery and legal cases.  The marriage license shown below was an exhibit in the 1913 divorce suit between Mary Belle (Pridmore) Merchant and husband Benjamin Merchant.  It is a gold mine of information, including the names of both bride and groom's parents.  In addition, the case itself mentions the name of their child, Warren Merchant.

This divorce case can be found online at the Library of Virginia's digital collection under the chancery records.

(The suit was dismissed on 5 May 1913 at Mary's request.)

I BENJAMIN PRIDMORE of the County of Prince William & State of Virginia being desirous of disposing of my effects in my lifetime do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following (viz.) 1st. I wish all my perishable property to be sold on a credit of nine months except my negroes and all my just debts & funeral expenses to be paid out of the proceeds of such sale.  2d. I give and bequeath to my wife LYIA PRIDMORE one third of all my estate that may remain both personal and real during her natural life.  3d. I give and bequeath to my daughter MARY D. PRIDMORE one sixth of all my estate that may remain both personal and real to her & her heirs forever.  4th. I give and bequeath to my son BENJAMIN and his heirs forever one sixth of all my estate both personal & real.  5th. I give and bequeath to my son-in-law JAMES A. SPINDLE and his wife SARAH JANE one sixth of all my estate to have and to hold the same forever subject to an account amounting to one hundred and thirty five dollars.  6th. I give and bequeath to my two grand daughters EMELINE FRANCIS SEE and MARGARET VIRGINIA SEE one sixth of all my estate both personal and real subject to an account of two hundred and fourteen dollars and fifty nine cents, but should said EMELINE F. and MARGARET SEE or either of them die without issue then it is my will that whatever property they may possess derived from my estate shall return to my lawful heirs.  7. I give and bequeath to my grand son EDON TEMPLE HUTCHINSON one sixth of all my estate both personal and real subject an account of forty nine dollars, but should said EDON TEMPLE HUTCHINSON die without issue then it is my will that whatever property he may be possessed of derived from my estate shall return to my lawful heirs.  8th. I give and bequeath to my two grand daughters SARAH CATHARINE and MARTHA ANN PRIDMORE one sixth of all my estate both personal and real subject to an account of one hundred dollars but should said SARAH CATHARINE and MARTHA ANN PRIDMORE or either of them die without issue then it is my will that whatever property they either of them may be possessed with derived from my estate shall return to my lawful heirs.  Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son BENJAMIN H. PRIDMORE executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of January 1846.

J. Taylor Williams was made Sergeant major of the Regiment by Col. Wickham and served through the Gettysburg Campaign.

William Willis Thornton (the first Captain) was made Major in the Commissary Department of Ewell’s forces and noted in that capacity until the close of the war.

Many members of Co. A were severely wounded.  John W. Fewell lost a leg at Five Forks. Lieut. B. D. Merchant had a long experience of prison live, and was one of those who were sent to Morris Island in Charleston Harbor.  Three died at Point Lookout and several others suffered long terms of prison life:  Charles H. Brawner, at Fort Delaware, and Luther Windsor, twenty months at Elmyra).

In the name of God amen I JOHN DYE JUNR. Of the County of Prince William & State of Virginia having my proper reason & memory do constitute this my last will and testament disallowing all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.  And first I recommend my soul to God who gave it, and as to my worldly property I do give and dispose of in the following manner.

Item I give unto my daughter SARAH LEE thirty pounds which she has already in her possession.

Item I give unto my daughter LYDIA PRIDMORE thirty pounds which she has already in her possession.

Item  I give unto my three sons namely JAMES, JOHN & DANIEL thirty pounds each, to be paid unto them as they come of age.

Item I give unto my beloved wife all the remainder of my estate both real and personal during her natural life, and after her death to be equally divided between my five children, or their heirs namely SARAH, DYDDA, JAMES, JOHN & DANIEL.  And I do hereby othorize and appoint my beloved wife MARY my Executrix & my friend RUTT JOHNSTON my Executor to this my last will and testament.  Signed sealed & pronounced this eighteenth day of March Anno Domi one thousand seven hundred & ninety eight.

I BENSON LYNN being weak of body but of sound mind do will and desire this my last will and testament shall be fully carried out after my death, I desire first all my just debts to be paid 2d. I leave my dwelling house and other houses and all the land on the south side of the Occoquan road and the east of the road heading to Lawrence Cole’s to my daughters MARY F. NORMAN, MAHALLA M. LYNN and LUWELLEN S. LYNN during their single lives but should either or all marry then their interest to be equally divided between SEYMOUR LYNN, GEORGE F. CARNEY, LELAND A. LYNN, JAMES E. LYNN and ALEXANDER P. LYNN together with the rest of my estate to the above named legatees. I leave LEVI C. LYNN, LAFAYETTE LYNN, ELIZABETH PRIDMORE and the heirs of LEROY W. LEROY M. LYNN

At a court held for Prince William County in the 3th day of January 1859.

This last will and testament of BENSON LYNN dec’d. was proved by the oaths of LEROY W. LYNN and WILLIAIM LYNN witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of ALEXANDER P. LYNN the executor therein named who made oath thereto, and together with SEYMOUR LYNN and GEORGE F. CARNEY their securities who justified as to their sufficiency entered unto and acknowledged this bond in the penalty of $4000.00 conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form.

Those Places Thursday: View of Henry Hill from Stone House (Manassas Battlefield)

This is a modern-day view of Henry Hill, Manasas Battlefield, from inside Stone House on the Old Warrenton Turnpike (modern Route 29).

Stone House, once a tavern on a major thoroughfare, is better known for its service as a hospital during the battles of First and Second Bull Run.

After the Civil War, one of the owners to modify the structure into a private home was Benson Pridmore, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth "Lucy" [Lynn] Pridmore.

Stone House is now part of the Manassas National Battlefield Park and open to the public during the spring/summer.

Primitive Baptist Church, Independent Hill

The Primitive Baptist Church at the corner of Aden and Joplin Roads in Independent Hill is no longer standing but the cemetery remains.
