Church Record Sunday: Chaplain: House of Representatives

Alexandria Gazette
22 February 1856

COMMUNICATED.

To the Editor of the Alexandria Gazette:

In your paper today, I find the following item of news: "An attempt was made last week, in the House of Representatives, to elect a chaplain, but without success.  Various candidates for the office were proposed, and among them Mr. Jones, of Tennessee, nominated Elder Robert C. Leachman, of Prince William county, Va., who, he said, was a hard shell Baptist in religion, and a Democrat in politics."

Lest it should be supposed by my friends abroad, that I was among the flock of hungry cormorants that have been hanging about the Capitol and haunting the members at their lodgings, since the first Monday in December, I desire to say, that I was no candidate for the office, and that the nomination was made without my consent or knowledge.  I desire to say, farther, that if elected I would not serve, for the reason, first, that Congress has no constitutional authority for creating such an office, and, of course, none for robbing the people's treasury to support it. 2d, I could not be induced to leave the flock of God, over which the Holy Ghost has made me overseer, and hire myself out, Balaam like, to divine for money. I look upon the whole thing as a desecration of the ministerial office, a shameful and unlawful waste of the people's money, and a capital burlesque upon religion, as taught in the Bible; and if Congress design perpetuating such sacrilege and extravagance, they will have to employ some other agent than me. I cast no reflections upon friend Jones, who put me in nomination, knowing, as I do, that he is as much opposed to the whole system as

Newspaper Tidbit: Letter from PWCo (1869)

Alexandria Gazette (Alexandria, VA)
5 March 1869

Letter from Prince William Co.
[Correspondence of the Alexandria Gazette]

Our County Court has been in session for the pat three days, ending yesterday evening. The following cases were adjudicated, and general business transacted: --

An indictment for unlawful trespass on the promises of Mrs. M. F. Holland, was found by the grand jury against Daniel Whaling.
Atkinson vs. Patterson, unlawful detainer, verdict for plaintiff.
Knox vs. Carter's adm'r. Pleas waived and judgment for plaintiff.
White, surviving, vs. the same. Plea waived and judgment for plaintiff.
   T. A. Brewis & Co. vs. E. J. T. Clarke. - Debt-verdict for plaintiff, with war interest abated.
Able vs. Able's adm'r. Debt-verdict for plaintiff, with war interest abated.
Johnson, surviving, vs. McLean. Debt-judgment for plaintiff.
Thomas vs. Howison. Debt-verdict for plaintiff.
Jacobs vs. Thomas. Trover-verdict for defendant.
John T. Leachman qualified as executor of the last will and testament of the late Elder R. C. Leachman.
James E. Williams qualified as administrator of John Williams, deceased.
Sarah Donohoe qualified as administratrix of George Donohoe, deceased.
Harvey Hyde having satisfied the Court that he is an ordained minister, and in regular communion with the Congregational church, was authorized to celebrate the rites of matrimony.
George W. Mitchell, a late appointee of General Stoneman's, qualified as Commissioner of the Revenue for Prince William county.
Ten deeds were admitted to record, and one marriage license issued during the session of Court.

From the pugilistic demonstrations made by several parties on the first day of Court, and their manifest desire to break the peace, if not each other's bones, it is evident that Prince William's vervor is not abated by the "situation" here, and that she is still, in one sense, on an active "war footing."

It is supposed that before the next term of our Court, the removals of officers in the county will have been generally made, and the new appointees will be here to qualify and enter on the duties of their respective stations.

William Smith, stabbed recently by Mr. Reuben Reid, which I reported at the time, has recovered. Mr. Reid is not yet under arrest and it is hoped that the affair, occuring as it did between near neighbors, may be amicably adjusted.

At the Castle of Perote, Mexico, on the 10th July last, of the prevailing disease of that country, Corporal Wm. R. Leachman, of Prince William County, Va. (Company F, R.M.R. late Capt. S. T. Mason) beloved and respected by all his comrades in arms, and lamented by a numerous circle of friends and relatives.  -- He was wounded at the battle of Cerro Gordo, of which he soon recovered, so as to be able to take his place: but in the  march from Jalapa to the city of Mexico, being unable to proceed farther than the castle, in consequence of sickness, was left behind with many others to join the army no more.  By this afflicting news, a heart stricken mother, and loving brothers and sisters, are made to mingle their tears and sympathies with the many households already clad in the habilaments of woe by this calamitous war.  -- When will it end?  Echo answers, when.  [The Washington Union and Balt.
