Friend of Friends Friday: Ranaway: Turner (1944)

9 July 1844

$50 REWARD. -- Eloped from Col. John Hooe's farm, in Prince William County, Va., on the 30th of June last, a negro man by the  name of TURNER, of the following description: He is about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, of a dark copper color, 23 or 24 years of age, with a small scar on the jaw rather below the surface of the skin, high forehead, fine countenance, and very red lips. At the time of his leaving his clothing consisted of linen pantaloons, cotton shirt, and yarn roundabout and cap. The above reward of $50 will be given if taken out of the State; $30 if taken in the District of Columbia; $20 if taken in the State of Virginia; and in each case secured in jail so that I get him again.

Legal Notice: Thomas v. Farrow (1850)

MESSRS. George Dye and John Hore, survivors partners of the late firm of George Dye & Co -- Take notice, that on the 13th day of January, 1851, I shall proceed to take the deposition of Daniel Ratcliffe, at his office, in the city of Washington, between sunrise and sunset of that day, and on the 17th day of January, 1851, I shall proceed to take the deposition of Washington H. Norville, at his mill in the County of Prince William, between sunrise and sunset of that day; which depositions are to be read as evidence on the trial of a suit in chancery now depending in the Circuit Court of Prince William County, in which I am plaintiff, and you and Thomas M. Farrow, and Walker P. Conway, administrator of John M. Conway, jr., deceased, and Seymour Lynn, administrator of Samuel Tansill, deceased, are defendants; and the taking of said depositions, will respectively be continued, if necessary, from day to day, till they are both closed. --

INQUISITION INDENTED and taken this fourteenth day of April Anno Domini 1808 at the Court House of Prince William County Between Philip D. Dawe Escheater for the Commonwealth of Virginia in and for the County aforesaid of the one part and George Williams, Samuel Davis, Wm. Keys, Benjamin Cole, Samuel Ashton, Noah Maddox, Benjamin Carney, James Holliday, George Cockrell, John Lowe, Thos. Jacob, Joseph Gilbert, John Watson, Wm. Cocke, Wm. Farrow and Beverly R. Wagener, good and lawful men and freeholders of the same County impannelled by the Sheriff of the same County and duly sworn, Witnesseth that the same good and lawful men so impannelled and sworn as aforesaid do find that Francis Rice late of the Borough of Norfolk dies siezed in fee simple of a tract of land containing one hundred and forty acres more or less lying near Dumfries in Prince Wm. County commonly called Grays that by his will duly proved and recorded in the Borough Court of Norfolk he devised said land to his wife Elizabeth Rice during her life and after her death to any children of the said Elizabeth that she might have after his the said Francis's death and if she should die without having such issue then to his the said Rice's surviving brothers and sisters, that said Elizabeth died sometime in the year 1804 -- without having any issue and that the brothers and sisters of the said Francis Rice appear to us to be aliens, It also does not appear to the jurors and Escheater aforesaid that the wife of the said Rice was a Citizen or that she hath relatives citizens of any of the United States of America, Therefore forasmuch as the said Francis Rice died without heir citizen of this Commonwealth or of the United States of America capable of holding the said before mentioned tract of land, that the same Escheated to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and to the same Commonwealth doth of right belong. We accordingly do escheat the same, Witness the hands and seals of the Escheator and of the jurors aforesaid the day and year above written.

N.B. The within mentd. land was purchased by William Savage of David Bland Deed recorded in the County Court of Prince Wm. in the year 1779, Savage devised his Estate to Edward Rice his will recorded in the General Court in 1789 Edwd. Rice devised hsi EState to Francis Rice within named his will recorded in the District Court held at Suffolk in 1801. Francis Rice devised it as writhin.

Friend of Friends Friday: Lease Agreement: Sowden to Tansill

The following document was submitted as supporting evidence in Culpeper County, Virginia in the 1859 chancery case of James A. M. Muschett v. Seymour Lynn (as executor of the Estate of Samuel Tansill).

We Ann Sowden & John Sowden have this day hired to Samuel Tansill, two negro men (Thomas & Philip) for one hundred and twenty dollars per year, commencing the first day of June Eighteen hundred & forty one and the said Tansill is to clothe them, pay their taxes and treat them with humanity, and pay the 1st one hundred and twenty dollars as follows, viz, he is to pay thirty dollars on the first day of Sept eighteen hundred & forty one and thirty dollars on the first day of Dec 1841 and thirty dollars on the first day of March eighteen hundred & forty two and thirty dollars on the first day of June eighteen hundred and forty two, and it is further on by the said Ann & John Sowdon that whatever interest may accrue on the bonds, which the said Tansill now holds of ours as assignee of Thos. A. Farrow shall be deducted from the above named hire of one hundred and twenty dollars.  In witness whereof we the parties to the above agreement have hereunto set our hands & affixed our seals this 24th day of May Eighteen hundred & forty one.

In the Name of God amen I FRANCIS RENOE of Prince William County and State of Virginia reflecting on the uncertainty of life and the necessity of having my estate divided among children by will to prevent disputes among them after my death being at the signing & dealing of this present writing of sound mind and memory thanks be to God to whose infinet mercy & goodness I recommend my soul & my body to the earth to be buried in a christian like manner and as for what worldly property it hath pleased God to bless me with I dispose of in the following manner.

Item I give and bequeath to my son ENOCH RENO all that tract or parcel of land which I purchased of JOHN TAPLEY to him and his heirs forever.

Item I give to my son ENOCH RENO a negro boy by the name of FREDERICK which he now hath in possession to him and his heirs for ever.

Item I give and bequeath to my son FRANCIS a Negro fellow named DICK which he now hath in possession a negro boy by the name of BEN.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter LIDIE MORE one negro fellow named PAGE to her and her heirs for ever.

Item I give and bequeath to my sons GEORGE and BAYLIS RENO the tract of land on which I now live to them and their heirs for ever.  George to have the part which lieth on the north side of Phillimons & Baylis to have that part which lieth on the sough side of the said run.  I also give my son a negro wench & her child which he now hath in possession CELIA & RACHEL & a negro boy by the name of LIGE.  And I also give my son Baylis a negro boy named PAGE also a Negro boy named SEMORE a fether bed & furniture & a cow & calf to the said George & Bayliss & their heirs for ever.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter NANCY WHITLEDGE a negro wench named POLL to her and her heirs of her body for ever & it is my will that the said ROBERT WHITLEDGE shall not by any means consider the said negro as his property or any of her increas & the whole of them to desend to my daughter NANCY children in an equal proportion.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter FANNEY TACKET a negro wench named WINNEY to her and the heirs of her body for ever & on the same terms with her sister Nancy’s gift.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter MILLEY JAMISON two Negroes the one named RACHEL & the other named BEN to her and her heirs of her body for ever & on the same condition with Elder sister Nancy’s gift.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter DOLLEY RENO a negro woman named NELL she and her increase to her and her heirs for ever also a negro woman named CARSHABA she and her increas to have and her heirs for ever a feather bed with furniture a cow and calf & a sow and pigs.

Item I give & bequeath to my daughter JANE RENO a negro woman & her increas named SIB to her & her heirs for ever also a negro wench named DELPH she and her increas to her and her heirs for ever a feather bed with furniture a cow & calf a sow & pigs.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter SUSANA CROSBY a negro woman named SUE she and her increas to her and her heirs for ever also a negro woman by the name of VILET she and her increas to her and her heirs for ever one feather bed with furniture a cow and calf a sow and pigs.

It is my will that BOB & JAMES & EATH shall be sold or hired to them that they like & what stock household furniture and remains of & the money arising from the same after deducting the legacies and paying all just debts and charges to be equally divided among my children.

Thereby revoke all former wills and declear this to be my last will and testament written on one sheat of paper in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of October in the year of one thousand seven hundred ninety four.

I hereby appoint my son ENOCH RENO & my son BAYLIS RENO executors to this my last will and testament.

BAYLIS is ordered to be recorded and the said Executors having performed what is usual in such cases certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I, ABRAM FARROW of the parish of Hamilton and County of Prince William planter being weak and infirm of body, but of sound memory and judgment thanks be to god do make appoint constitute and ordain this my Last will and Testament hereby revoaking anulling and declaring void all other wills or Testaments whatsoever by me heretofore made,

Imprimis I bequeath my precious and immortal soul into the hands of Almighty god my creator my body I leave to the ground to be decently interr’d according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned hoping for a blessed Resurrection, through Jesus Christ, and as to what worldly goods and estate it hath pleased god to bless me with I will that they be disposed in manner following.  Item I bequaith my Negro named BOATSWIN unto my son, ISAC. FARROW and the heirs of his body, Item, I bequeath Negro SUSAN unto my beloved wife SIBELL FARROW.  Item I bequaith negro SYLVESTER unto my Daughter LIDIA and the heirs of her body forever.  Item I bequaith Negro’s TOM & PHILLIP unto my son ABRAM and the heirs of his body for ever, Item I bequaith Negro GOEN unto my son JOHN and the heirs of his body for ever.  Item I bequaith Negro JUDY unto my daughter ELIZABETH and the heirs of her body for ever.  Item my will is that all my moveable estate be apris’d and after my Debts are paid that the remainder be equally devided between my daughter’s, SIBELL and MARGARET FARROW’s.  Lastly, I appoint my wife SIBELL FARROW and my brother WILLIAM FARROW my whole and only Executors of this my Last will and Testament Sealed with my seal and dated this eighteenth day of March Anna Domini 1741.

CLAYLAND the other witness subscribe the same) it was admitted to record, WILLIAM FARROW one of the Executors therein named refusing the burthen thereof on the motion of the said SIBELL and her performing what is usual in such cases Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

THIS INDENTURE made and entered into this 12th day of May in the year Our Lord Eighteen Hundred & Twenty seven Between WILLIAM KEYS of the County of Harrison and GEORGE COPIN of the County of Prince William Both of the State of Virginia on the one part and JOHN U. REEVES of the County of Prince William of the other part.  Witnesseth, That the said WILLIAM KEYS & GEORGE COPIN for and in Consideration of the sum of Twenty dollars to them in hand paid at & before the Ensealing and delivery of these presents, hath Granted Bargained and sold alliened Ensealed and Confirmed and by these presents do Grant Bargain & Sell allien Enseal and Confirm unto the said JOHN U. REEVES and his heirs and assigns a Certain tract or parcell of Land Situate Lying and being in the County of Prince William & State aforesaid Containing Twelve acres more or less and is Bounded as followeth Viz. Beginning at a Red Oak on the North side of Quantico run Corner to the Lands of FARROW and PHILIP CARTER thence with the line of sd. Carter S 10 [degrees] E. 106 poles to the line of BENNETT thence with the road to the run to a Corner of the land formerly leas’d to JONATHAN GATHAM thence up the said run and Binding there with the Beginning together with all houses profits advantages Ways Waters & Water Courses with the appurtenances of every kind and nature Whatever thereto apertaining To have and to hold the aforesaid Bargained premises with their appurtenances unto the said JOHN U. REEVES his Heirs and assigns to the only proper use of him the said JOHN U. REEVES and his Heirs & assigns forever and lastly the aforesaid WM. KEYS & GEO. COPIN for themselves their heirs Excrs. & assigns do by these presents warrant and forever defend the aforesaid Bargained premises with their appurtenances to the sd. JOHN U. REEVES & his heirs & assigns against all Claims of any person or persons what ever.
