Prince William County, Virginia is rich in history. Formed in 1731, it was named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, son of King George II. This blog is intended as a place for descendants and researchers of PWCo families to find and share information.
As they used the town name "Salem in Fauquier", that dates the tour as pre-1882. It was 1882 when the Post Office insisted that Salem in Fauquier change its name because mail was being confused with Salem in Roanoke Co., VA. The town of Salem then took the name of one of its most influential residents - Chief Justice John Marshall - and is now Marshall, VA.
