Tombstone Tuesday: Martha J. Lynn

Martha Jane Lynn is my great-grandmother.  The daughter of Edna Ann (Cole) and John Henry Lynn, she was born 14 April 1869 in Prince William County and died sometime before 1899.  Little is known about Martha, and she remains one of my most frustrating brick walls.  Who was the father of her child, my grandfather Earl Lynn (b. 11 October 1891 in PWCo.) and when did Martha pass away?  The answers are out there, somewhere ...

Martha is buried in the Cole-Ashby family cemetery beside her mother and her grandparents, Lawrence and Jane Cole.

  1. The father of Earl Lynn, born 11 October 1891 is listed on Ancestry.com as John J. Murphy, born 1855 in Stafford, VA. John J. Murphy is the son of Benjamin H. and Harriett Murphy. The entire Lynn family is detailed along with the Keys family.

    1. Thank you. I did see that, and have been trying to find out what led them to that information/conclusion. Earl Lynn never used "Murphy" and never included it on any application forms as his father. Unfortunately, without knowing the source, I can't really credit it since "Earl Lynn" has proved to be a popular first and middle name around the turn of the last century.
